The Hungarian Catholic Church, the Diocese of Szombathely and the County City of Szombathely celebrates in 2016 the 1700th anniversary of Saint Martin’s birth.
He was the first saint of our Church who has been recognized as saint by the faithful not through martyrdom, but through the good example of his life. He was born in 316 in Savaria today’s Szombathely. We celebrate this anniversary in 2016.
Saint Martin’s example and christian faith is presented and spread through many programmes during this jubilee year. The most important diocesan and municipal programme of the Saint Martin Year is the feast organized on the 9-10th of July 2016 in Szombathely: the Saint Martin Meeting. The so called „Emlékmű-domb” (Monument Hill) is the venue of the programmes.
The Catholic International Meeting and the meeting of all the Saint Martin parishes from all over the Carpathian Basin will be held on the 9th of July. The day will start with the Holy Mass at 10.30 am. with the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, moreover faithful and priests are all welcome from over the borders. His Eminence Dominik Duka O.P. Cardinal, Archbishop of Prague will represent Pope Francis at this holy mass.
All intereted guests can participate to many lectures, exhibitions moreover the 25th anniversary of the Catholic Caritas will be part of the celebrations. The programme will end with the famous Hungarian pop-Christian rock singer-songwriter Ákos’s concert from 7 pm.
The 2016 UEFA Euro Cup Final football match will take place on the 10th of July evening after the concert, therefore all guests can watch this great event on a big screen at the Monument Hill.
