Csehimindszent

CSEHIMINDSZENTThe first chartered script to be found about Csehimindszent is from 1314, which states that the members of the Vasvári family shared the estate of the village, but the church, built to the honour of All Saints, remained as the common advowson of the family members. Its name known today first appeared in 1549 in the form of “Chehy Myndzent”. The village is mentioned together with Pogh township several times, Poty land today. The area became deserted in the Turkish era and only after 1678 it began to be populated.

The foundations of the church today were laid with bricks at the beginning of the 13th century. The nave was 10 metres long and 9 metres wide, to which the 8-metre long and 9-metre wide shrine of a multi-angle delineation and early-gothic style was attached in around the 1330s.

After 1678 the settlings put new life into the village and the reconstruction of the church began. In 1690 the visitatio canonica reported about the ruinous state of the church. In 1698 Provost István Kazó, a visitor of the diocese, reported about the church that had been renovated and reshingled but it did not have a tower yet.

In 1773-1774 the church was extended. Then the choir, the bell tower and the sacristy were built, which was financed by the then-avowee. During the years following the extension the church was furnished with folkish baroque-style furniture. The main altar-piece was painted by István Dorffmaister in 1793. For a long time the village had no parish-priest, for this time it belonged to Baltavár, but in 1756 the village gained the rank of a parish again.

CSEHIMINDSZENTThere was a more significant modification between 1927 and 1930 while István Baráth was a parish-priest. The inner level of the church was decreased by one metre and the liturgical furniture was painted again then. The secco surrounding the main altar-piece was finished in 1982, which was made by Zoltán Závory on commission from Antal Takács parish-priest. In the picture John Bosco-Saint, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Blessed László Batthyány, an oculist from Körmend, Saint Rita and Cardinal József Mindszenty's mother can be seen.

József MindszentyOn the wall of the shrine a painting of Primate József Mindszenty was placed, who was born in the village. He was baptised there on 29th March 1892. The Stations of the Cross were made from the linden-tree which was standing in front of the church before by the carver Tamás Balogh from Csénye in 2002. In the park next to the church, depicting the Cardinal there is a memorial to be seen, which was erected in 1992 to the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The latest redecoration and reconstruction took place in 2014-2015, which changed the entire centre of the village, since the church got renewed inside and outside due to the subsidy of HUF 106m from the Hungarian Government to preserve Cardinal József Mindszenty's dignity appropriately. There is a new frontal servicing altar, an ambo and benches were placed in the church, new sacristy furniture was made and the old altars and the pulpit were restored, too.

The Stations of the Cross were erected around the church then, the bronze reliefs of which were made by Imre Szabó's son, Béla. The huge square and hill around the church were then got landscaped and new parking places were formed.

The outer floodlight of the church and the church square was made from the offering of a generous benefactor.
